Media is a sturdy tool of communication. In order to manifest the social issues, media has to play its role discreetly. It must be neutral in every aspect. In a democracy, the government should be a transparent and need to convey the information for which it uses news channels, radio, print media, social media, etc. Meanwhile, media also enjoy the best form of freedom of expression. The prime responsibility of media is to reveal the best form of truth but unethical media practices in India are at zenith point.

According to the survey which was conducted recently by the Richard Edelman for World Economic Forum, Indian media is the second most untrusted institution in the world. The meaning of ‘freedom of speech’ which is given by our constitution stretched to the extent that now anybody can speak anything despite balderdash, it communicated.  The Indian media is working as if it is an unaccountable authority and as an agent for political parties and large business corporates. It is a wise to consider news channels and newspapers as an organizational player. Most of them are corrupt. They publish the news which would be lucrative for them.

There are many unethical media practices taken place like…

  • Paid News:

The frequently found that many mainstream media release news for which they are getting paid by the sponsor for positive coverage. Sponsors can be a politician, businessmen or celebrities. Through paid news, media houses build the wrong opinion about the matter of fact. The highest form of paid news found in print media. During 2014 Lok Sabha elections, election commission of India detected genuine 694 paid news cases.

  • Repetition:

They tend to show a single news by a different way and each time under the different show. If any top stories come out, then it would last for 2-3 days.

  • Inappropriate Methodology:

From interviews and debate, one would expect to know the perspective of an expert regarding the subject, but in reality, we are getting ridiculous and stupid things like the way of asking questions to invited guest, screaming and shouting in a debate, selection of sensitive topics like secularism, etc. to make the show hit. News are edited not by the editor but by the marketers. They identify the fascinating stories to publish which may not even authentic. Editor twists the stories and makes a headline in such a way that we barely skip it. Our media always gives attention to politics, crime, tragedies, Bollywood, and cricket. It is very hard to find out profound stories on international affairs, sports (except cricket), literature and technology.

  • Baloney news:

The quality of the story has been getting down and touched the ground level. The media houses figure out controversial topic or tragedies which just generate the interest of the public. But it is indeed unnecessary to broadcast. In the morning, few well-known BABAs telling how will be your whole day or if ‘you do this then that will happen’ worst piece of information. After evicted from ‘Big Boss 10’, Swami Om got coverage from our media. What information one could expect from such a stupid guy!

  • Too much focus on Cricket and Bollywood:

Try to collect the top stories of yesterday, mostly were from Cricket Bollywood or tragedy.  If any series or match won by the Indian team, they would get full day coverage. There is a remarkable contribution of our media to make our cricketer a celebrity. Not only in cricket but same thing found in Bollywood. Media break down the wall between personal and profession life of Bollywood stars. Meanwhile, Bollywood stars also use media as a promotional tool for their upcoming films. Indian audience also gets half an hour of news each day in most of the news channels on a piece of information pulled off latest small screen primetime or reality shows.

Now Traditional media players expanding their wings on social media while social network is boosting them to do so effectively. On social media, we are getting information which we like to hear or watch. The advantage of the same leveraged as well. Traditional media players already grab a large space of social media and play off the same unethical media practices what they are doing in traditional media. Just take a look at the stories on a page of Dainik Bhaskar on Facebook.

Every color of the media was visible immediate after demonetization decision by PM Modi. We had got a variety of news on demonetization like Zee News was showing that one of the finest decision ever taken by Indian Government, while on Aaj Tak, people was praising the decision of BJP. On NDTV, people facing too many problems to exchange the money. None of the Hindi news channels took interest to broadcast the authentic story on the absolute impact of demonetization on Indian economy.

“The Indian Media is politically free but imprisoned by profit.” Mirror of the society has broken. We believe that we know everything but in reality, we know nothing. We don’t have even imagination that at what scale corruption has been taking place at high officials. All the unethical media practices are decaying the whole society and one of the most hazardous things for India.
